So Bryan had a crisis at work (several, in fact) so he’s on vacation. He’s been on vacation since last Wednesday and will be through this weekend. He needs the sleep and relaxation time. We’ve actually been seeing so much of each other it’s almost borderline obnoxious, in a good way. I’m glad he’s taking the time off. We also hung out with my parents on Saturday night, which was great. Family time! Yay! This week is much needed for both of us.
The Dark Knight was unbelievably amazing. Could I have thought anything less? It beats Iron Man as the top comic book movie of 2008, for me, and… well, it’s battling with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for all of 2008 — but Indy was so much more about nostalgia than any one thing. So maybe The Dark Knight tops it. Heath Ledger’s performance by now is legendary. And it is. Creepy as anything. Terrifying — one of the best villians, ever. People were saying nearly as good as Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs… but no. Different, but almost better. Lecter didn’t use guns. Guns terrify me. (The impersonality of being killed by a gun is frankly more terrifying than any other weapon; yes, in a strange way I would be less afraid of a different, more personal weapon. But that’s something the Joker actually discusses in The Dark Knight… never mind. I smell a long tangent.) The film itself was outstanding in a lot of ways. Gary Oldman was terrific as Gordon — his role was much larger than in the first film, and I was surprised at how convinced I was at his being-a-cop-ness. Somehow I’d never really seen Gary Oldman as Gordon in the first film, but he really came out in this one. Maggie Gyllenhaal was an absolute improvement over Katie Holmes and Aaron Eckhart was intense and polarized as Harvey Dent (and Two-Face). Christian Bale was divine. But then he always is. The film is on the must-buy list of DVDs (with Iron Man and Indy).
Still need to see Wall-E though…
