News about movies & milk

Lots of things. First, this last weekend was spent with Bryan’s family and we had a lot of fun. Nice, relaxing. Fun.

Next: the first actual review, rather than article, about The Dark Knight I’ve found so far. I’m so excited!

And pertaining to my last entry, Will Smith did once again top the box office despite so-so reviews. As it says,

Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office analysts Media By Numbers, said Smith’s bankability helped him to an eighth number one debut overall.

Hancock did not get great reviews, but it doesn’t matter. A guy like Will Smith is arguably the most bankable star in the world,” he said.

In other news, folks, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends, among other things, giving low-fat milk to children as young as one year old — though it did specify it’s a good idea particularly for kids for whom obesity might be a concern. I’ll see what the pediatrician says in the future (and I know that by the time I start having kids, the recommendation will probably have completely changed), but I am not a whole milk fan and don’t really like the idea of giving that to my kids once they’re a certain age especially knowing from experience how undesirable weening off of it and moving to 2% then 1% then skim can be. Bryan and I agree that doing the low-fat milk thing early — and emphasizing milk, a lot — is very important. I have bones of steel because of all my milk consumption (I say that because of all of the accidents I’ve been in that should have broken my bones but didn’t) and I think it’s a great idea. Plus milk is just a natural choice to go a long with a lot of good foods. Mmm, milk and cookies. Cough. I mean, healthy cookies… yeah… healthy cookies…

I also went to Trader Joe’s yesterday — the only one in Manhattan, off Union Square — and got a few items. I got few enough that I was on the 12 items or less line (I had 10; sigh; I could have stuffed another few things in the basket and gotten away with it) and still had to wait on the longest line I’ve ever been on in a grocery store. But it’s Trader Joe’s! It’s… it’s… not your average store. Which is why I hauled myself down there. They’ve got some amazing food. I’ll have to go with a backpack next time and pick up some of their $3-6 bottles of wine at their wine store (people bring rolling luggage for their wine purchases). It’s the cheapest wine I’ve found in Manhattan, even with the $4 subway fee for the commute.

I’ve also started Proven Guilty, the eighth Harry Dresden book. Dead Beat was awesome. I can’t wait to catch up with the latest book… while necessary it’ll also be sad. I’ll be another hungry fan waiting for the next one to come out. Though I read enough Urban Fantasy series that I tend to have a new installment coming out every month or so, so it’s not so bad. This August and this fall are chock full of updates to series I’m reading. In between all of that I need to catch up on some older swords & sorcery fantasy (slowly but surely I am reading through all of the “classics” from the ’70s and ’80s). I have a list and I need to chip away at it. So much to read!

Lastly: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince looks great so far. And Jim Broadbent as Horace Slughorn? HAVE THEY CAST EVERY MAJOR BRITISH ACTOR TODAY IN THIS SERIES OR WHAT? Really. It’s awesome and unsurprising but hilarious and even a little strange how every major British actor is sort of also known as someone in the world of Harry Potter. Jeez. Definitionally a phenomenon or what?
